What is llama packing

Both times we took the necessary precautions to mitigate any problems or injuries the llamas could face and had no issues to speak of. Yes, they do but only at each other or when in danger. I have never been spit on from any of our packers, but have been spit on by a protective mama llama protecting its baby. Llamas do not wear shoes like a horse; they have a split toe like bighorn sheep or mountain goats and have a soft pad much like a dog or camel.

This gives them ultimate balance, stability and traction in steep, rocky, cliffy, loose or hard terrain. Llamas are very alert and attentive and know when something is wrong. If they see or sense a wolf or grizzly they make a loud alarm sound with their voice that alerts you and warns off predators for the most part.

We have never had any backcountry attacks, but have had grizzlies in camp. The alarm call from the llamas saved the day. An old outfitter trick we also like to use is to bring a radio and extra batteries and leave it on when we leave camp. This has helped over the years as well. Adults cannot ride llamas.

If your kids want to ride them and weigh less than 90 pounds then yes, they can ride them. We make saddles for kids and it makes the backcountry more accessible for families. We pasture our llamas six months of the year and feed hay forage six months of the year. Good trained packers are usually at least four years old or more and have over , light duty to medium duty miles of pack experience in the backcountry. As you can see llamas are not horses or mules or goats. They are not better or worse than any pack stock out there.

Llamas have a very unique place in the pack industry, especially for the serious backcountry hiker, hunter or angler looking for an edge on the competition.

Llamas help you stay higher longer, eat better, hunt harder and save your body, allowing you to hunt for years to come. On our trips, you have the option of leading a llama or enjoying the wilderness at your own pace. While at camp the llamas will be tethered to a stake in the ground to be able to graze at their leisure. Join us for a alpine mountain lake llama basecamp or alpine lake loop llama trek. For me, hunting was the catalyst that got me into llamas. Though some purists out there prefer the simplicity that backpack hunting offers, using stock for hunting comes with a lot of benefits. You can hunt hard to reach areas for longer periods of time, and easily pack out game without having to leave anything behind. After hunting with horses, mules, and goats, we decided that llamas are, once again, the answer.

Generally speaking, it takes about three strong llamas to pack out an elk, or one llama to pack out a deer. Some might worry about them being bothered by the smell of dead game, but we have had them pack out just about every western game species with no issues. Because hunters have been using horses for centuries, game typically associates horses with humans. This is not the case with llamas, and, in fact, can be quite the opposite.

Most animals have never seen a llama, and are oftentimes curious about the strange-looking creatures. If anything, these guys are an attractant. One of the biggest advantages llamas have over other types of stock is their ability to handle rugged terrain and varying weather conditions. Having come from the rugged Andes Mountains, llamas are specifically adapted to handle rough terrain and extreme weather. We have taken our llamas up and over rocky passes, in knee-deep snow, and through deadfall-ridden forests.

You need to take careful consideration when reaching the extremes on each end. Though doable, it takes planning and proper mitigation methods. So what happens when you get to camp, or when you head out to hunt for the day? Well, not much to be honest. Llamas are low-maintenance animals. Once at camp, all they need is a place with forage to be staked out in, a bucket of water, and maybe a scoop of llama pellets.

Just check on them once in the morning and once at night and you are good to leave them in camp while you hunt. Often, we will bring the llamas with us while we hunt. After a few days in camp, they get bored. If pack llamas sound like the perfect addition to your next hunt, then you are in luck.

These user-friendly animals are easily rentable, no guide needed, and no experience required. We sell a few of our llamas each spring and fall. Fast forward a few years and that dream finally became a reality. Before I get started, I will say that pack goats are a fun animal to be around. In terms of their demeanor, pack goats are like labrador retrievers but with horns. I fully enjoyed hunting with them. But…after using llamas on a backcountry hunt in Wyoming, llamas are easily my preferred pack animal.

They are absolutely perfect for my style of hunting. Below are a few reasons why I now feel that llamas are truly the perfect pack animal. Before we go any further, when I'm talking about the ultimate pack animal, I'm especially referring to a pack animal that can be easily accessible for the average person.

To my knowledge, you can't rent horses or mules and use them for a hunt. Then at the same time, would that person renting a horse and some mules have the experience to use them in the mountains? Renting llamas opens the door for the average person to greatly improve their time on the mountain without having to go on a guided hunt in order to get access to horses or mules.

What I mean by this is llamas have the ability to follow you in some of the roughest terrain the West has to offer. During my eight-day trip into the mountains of Wyoming for mule deer a few years ago, I moved camp three times. Each time, I would take my trusty llamas Marshall and McShane up to a ridgetop where we would dive into a steep basin and then climb up the other side.

The two llamas never gave me any attitude at the challenge and their sure-footedness instantly proved how amazing they can be. Up until recently while filming hunts, most of my hunting has always been solo. Hunting solo adds a lot of freedom, but also has its challenges. One of the biggest challenges or hurdles is staying safe in grizzly country.
