The plants send out underground runners in all directions to propagate. Runners sprout stems that turn into new canes. Some raspberry species also root cane-tips that touch the ground. In several seasons, your new raspberry patch will contain many more canes than you started with and perhaps more than you bargained for.
Avoid pruning at your own risk. The long canes of the raspberry plants produce stems and leaves one year, flowers and fruit the second. After fruiting, the canes die and should be removed. Summer-bearing varieties should be whacked to the ground immediately after the June harvest. You can remove ever-bearing raspberry canes the spring after they fruit.
At the same time, you should be vigilant about removing new suckers and canes that creep outside the space you have allotted for your berry patch. The project of cleaning up the garden will be an arduous one if you leave the berries to their own devices for a few years. Raspberry plants require well-drained soil with a pH of around 6 to grow and produce fruit.
But here's a trick used by many raspberry growers: Instead of getting two crops from each cane, prune back all of the canes to the ground in late winter or early spring. The resulting growth will produce one big late crop and it's usually larger than the two smaller crops combined. Raspberries are one of the easiest, most rewarding, and most productive fruits you can grow at home.
